What is Silk Twill?
At it’s most basic, Silk Twill is of course a fabric made from Silk. Silk is a natural fibre produced by silkworms. This is where the magic of silk begins! Silk Twill is in turn a light or light-mid-weight material that is manufactured in an even twill weave.
The exact make-up and look and feel of this material can vary, and can generally range from quite soft and drapey, to very crisp. It’s a versatile fabric which is one of it’s key strengths.
The history of the silk twill fabric that is commonly used in many women’s scarves these days is an extensive and interesting one. If you look back through time, you might well hear this specific fabric referred to by a variety of names. These might include foulard, sarcenet, serge, and armure silk. This is basically all referring to silk twill under a variety of different guises. Look out for these interchangeable references in all manner of places.
The earliest evidence of silk was found at the sites of Yangshao culture in Xia County, Shanxi, where a silk cocoon was found cut in half by a sharp knife, dating back to between 4000 and 3000 BC!
